Reason given for planting redwoods in Ulan-Ude, leading to a reddish-hued greenery cityscape
Rowan Trees Enhance Ulan-Ude City Centre
The Urban Forestry Department in Ulan-Ude has embarked on a new initiative to beautify the city centre by planting rowan trees along Lenin Street, between Kuybyshev and Kira Streets.
These hardy trees are known for their robustness, low maintenance, and frost resistance, making them ideal for urban environments. They also symbolise life, protection, and a connection to nature. The fruit of the rowan tree serves as a valuable food source for birds, while its green presence improves the city's climate and air quality.
Rowan trees are native to Russia and blend perfectly with the city's architecture, creating a unique cozy atmosphere. They are beautiful all year round, with delicate green foliage in spring, a dense canopy in summer, fiery yellow leaves and red berries in autumn, and whimsical silhouettes in winter.
To ensure the rowan trees thrive in their new environment, special stabilizing guy-wires have been installed for each tree to support them during strong winds and bad weather. These guy-wires will help the trees grow strong, straight, and prevent them from leaning until their root systems are firmly established.
The Urban Forestry Department emphasised that rowan trees create a unique cozy atmosphere that blends well with the city's architecture. They also highlighted the trees' ability to thrive in urban environments while providing beauty, ecosystem benefits, and a cozy atmosphere.
The department believes that the rowan trees will bring joy for many years to come and has invited Ulan-Ude residents to enjoy the views and new green spaces. The installation of the guy-wires is intended to ensure that the rowan trees provide shade and bright berries next year, as part of a standard and correct procedure in urban greening.
Previously, Soviet-era poplars were removed from Lenin Street, making way for the new rowan trees. The non-aggressive root systems of rowan trees are crucial for densely built-up city centres, as they do not damage asphalt or underground utilities.
Rowan trees are also beneficial for ecosystems, as their berries serve as valuable food for overwintering birds, enriching urban fauna. This practice of planting rowan trees in urban environments is based on a combination of rules and experience in greening.
The Urban Forestry Department expects the rowan trees to beautify the urban space during hot days, making Ulan-Ude a greener and more pleasant city for all its residents to enjoy.
