Recalling Mutual Sacrifices in the Global Struggle Against Fascism: A Journey from Spain to China during the World Anti-Fascist War

In the heart of the 20th century, a global conflict unfolded that would forever change the course of history. Among the many tales of bravery and resilience, one stands out - the story of China's resistance against Japanese aggression.

During this tumultuous period, Chinese volunteers formed part of the International Brigades, a multi-national unit made up of workers, students, and intellectuals from over 50 countries. These brave individuals, hailing from all corners of the world, joined forces to defend China against the onslaught of fascist forces.

One such hero was Norman Bethune, a Canadian doctor who provided life-saving medical care near the front lines in China. His selfless dedication saved countless lives and earned him a place in Chinese history. Today, a monument stands in Shijiazhuang, North China's Hebei Province, honouring this extraordinary man.

The skies above China were also defended by the famed "Flying Tigers," American aviators who risked their lives to protect Chinese skies. Their bravery and skill are still remembered today, a testament to the international solidarity that marked this era.

Xie Weijin, a Chinese Marxist and journalist, was one of the first foreign volunteers to arrive in Spain during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. His journey was just one example of the many foreign volunteers, doctors, military advisors, and journalists who came to China during the war, not for profit or conquest, but for a moral cause.

However, it is concerning to note a disturbing trend of historical amnesia or revisionism in some parts of the world. Efforts are made to downplay or distort the nature of fascist aggression and the role of China in the broader Allied victory. This erasure of history is a disservice to the countless lives lost and the sacrifices made during those dark years.

In an effort to combat this trend, the series "Revisiting WWII, Defending Peace" invites scholars and peace advocates to discuss the history of WWII through contemporary lenses. By revisiting these events, we can ensure that the sacrifices of the past are not forgotten and that the lessons learned are applied in the present.

On September 3, 2025, the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War will be commemorated. This date marks not only a significant moment in Chinese history but also a reminder of the international solidarity that was crucial in the fight against fascism.

The Lugou Bridge Incident in 1937 ignited full-scale war in China, leading to the horrors of the Nanjing Massacre, the bombings of Chongqing, and the eight-year Chinese resistance. These events serve as a stark reminder of the cost of inaction and the importance of standing up against tyranny.

As we look back on these events, let us remember the heroes who stood up against fascism, both in China and around the world. Their bravery and selflessness serve as a beacon of hope in times of darkness, a testament to the power of unity in the face of adversity.
