Record-shattering heights in Tanzania's travel and tourism industry were achieved in the year 2023.

In 2023, Tanzania's Travel & Tourism sector experienced a notable resurgence, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). The sector, which represented 9.5% of Tanzania's economy, contributed TZS 18.6TN to the national GDP, surpassing the 2019 peak by 4%.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, reiterated the sector's growth and its pivotal role in job creation in Tanzania's economy. In 2023, employment in Tanzania's Travel & Tourism sector reached more than 1.4MN, adding more than 97,300 new jobs.

The WTTC's 10-year forecast indicates continued growth and increased employment over the coming years in Tanzania's Travel & Tourism sector. By 2034, the sector is projected to reach TZS 30.9TN, employing almost one in 15 workers in the country. This could potentially create 600,000 new jobs, as predicted by the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

In 2023, international visitor expenditure in Tanzania reached TZS 8TN, 11.1% above the 2019 level. Domestic spending in the sector also saw a boost, reaching TZS 3.7TN, 12.8% above the 2019 level. In 2024, international visitor expenditure is projected to reach TZS 8.7TN, and domestic visitor spending is expected to grow to more than TZS 3.9TN.

The WTTC's 10-year forecast for Tanzania's Travel & Tourism sector highlights the sector's role in driving economic development and job creation. The forecast projects that the sector will continue contributing to job creation, with 710,000 new jobs added by 2034.

In 2024, the WTTC projects that Travel & Tourism's contribution to Tanzania's national economy will reach TZS 20.3TN. By 2034, Travel & Tourism is expected to account for a significant portion of the country's economy, with the sector's GDP reaching TZS 30.9 trillion.
