Rare Video Unearths Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Mastery

A captivating video of the renowned Russian composer and pianist, Dmitri Shostakovich, has surfaced on Instagram, offering a rare glimpse into his performance abilities. The video, shared by Bastian Osis and credited to pianist and musicologist Peter Laul, showcases Shostakovich playing a fast and nimble rendition of his own piano arrangement of the opening of the third act from his 1932 opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.

Born in 1906, Shostakovich began his musical journey at a tender age of nine, under the tutelage of his mother, a professional pianist. He later attended the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 16, studying under the direction of composer Alexander Glazunov.

The video, recorded in the radio recording of the Bach Festival in Leipzig in 1950, documents Shostakovich's piano performance as part of the festival archive. The recording captures Shostakovich playing with a nostalgically muffled sound and a hint of untuned dissonance, which adds to the authenticity of the video and the appreciation of his music.

Shostakovich's life was marked by a tumultuous relationship with the authorities. By 1936, he had already upset the Soviet establishment. Despite this, he remained exhilaratingly focused throughout his performances, as evident in the recently discovered video.

The video's caption reads, "I found a video of the ACTUAL Shostakovich playing piano," and it mentions that Shostakovich's playing has a rudimentary and forceful nature. This video provides a unique insight into Shostakovich's performance abilities, a trait that was instrumental in shaping his music during his career.

The video's existence adds to the appreciation of Shostakovich's music and his legacy. It serves as a testament to his talent and resilience, particularly during a time when videos of classical composers from that era are scarce.

Dmitri Shostakovich, a significant 20th Century composer, produced his First Symphony when he was only 19. His works, including Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk, were known for their complex and often dark themes, which often put him at odds with the Soviet authorities.

Despite the challenges he faced, Shostakovich's music continues to resonate with audiences around the world. The discovery of this video offers a valuable addition to our understanding and appreciation of his musical genius.
