Red-haired individuals congregate at a festive event
The annual "Redhead Days" festival, a unique multi-day occasion that started 20 years ago as an art project, is back and bigger than ever. This year's edition, taking place in Tilburg, promises music, food trucks, and workshops for thousands of participants from around 80 countries.
The tradition of the festival originated from an art project by Dutch artist Bart Rouwenhorst. Back in 1999, Mr. Rouwenhorst placed an advertisement in a local newspaper calling for 15 red-haired models. The response was overwhelming, with Mr. Rouwenhorst receiving ten times the number of responses he had expected. The first festival was organized the following year.
Today, the festival has grown from its humble beginnings and is celebrated as a global event. Mr. Rouwenhorst, who continues to oversee the festival, is proud to see how it has evolved. He declares, "It's really amazing because everyone looks alike, and they feel like it's a family."
One such family member is Elounda Bakker, a Dutch regular who has been attending the festival for 15 years. Ms. Bakker plays cards with a group of international redhead friends who reunite annually at the event. Magician Daniel Hank, who traveled six hours from Germany, is also excited to be a part of the festivities.
The festival is free and open to all, except for the group photo on Sunday, which is reserved for "natural" redheads. The workshops are tailored to the specific needs of redheads, including makeup tutorials and skin cancer prevention.
In 2013, the festival set a Guinness World Record for the "largest gathering of people with natural red hair." This year, the organisers expect another impressive turnout.
The "Redhead Days" festival is more than just a celebration of redheads and their fiery locks. It's a testament to the power of art and the strength of community. For redheads and non-redheads alike, it's an opportunity to come together and experience something truly special.
