Redefining victory at Ferrari's turf with Verstappen
Red Bull's Verstappen Takes Pole Position in Monza
In the Italian Grand Prix qualifying session, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing secured his 45th career pole position, setting a new track record at Monza. The Dutch driver finished 77 thousandths of a second ahead of Lando Norris, who placed second for McLaren.
Verstappen's impressive performance in qualifying came despite a substantial 104-point deficit in the championship standings, as he trails championship leader Oscar Piastri. Piastri, who finished third in qualifying, leads Norris by 34 points.
The qualifying session saw some tense moments, with Norris locking up and skipping the first chicane during his second segment run. Despite this, he managed to progress to the next round. Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls, who finished third in Zandvoort, did not make it past the first round this time.
Helmut Marko, Red Bull's motorsport advisor, commended Verstappen's performance, noting his strong showing in the long runs during Friday's practice and his impressive drive in qualifying.
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari finished fourth in qualifying, while Lewis Hamilton started in fifth place due to a penalty from Zandvoort last Sunday. Hamilton, driving a Ferrari in Lauda's iconic red and white colors during the practice session, was unable to challenge the front-runners in qualifying.
The Ferrari cars were repainted in a new, old livery to honor Niki Lauda's first world title, won at Monza in 1975. The fastest race lap at the Formula 1 event in Monza not driven by Leclerc or Hamilton was set by Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari SF-23 with a time of 1:20.294 minutes, averaging 259.730 km/h.
The favourites, Norris, Piastri, Leclerc, and Verstappen, progressed comfortably to the second round. Nico Hülkenberg in the Sauber was eliminated, unlike his teammate Gabriel Bortoleto.
As the Italian Grand Prix approaches, the race promises to be an exciting battle between Verstappen and Piastri, with Norris and Leclerc hoping to challenge for the win.
