Regular investigations reveal recurring safety issues associated with the rising prevalence of Active Driving Aid technology

In a bid to enhance the safety and efficiency of Autonomous Driving Systems (ADAS), the American Automobile Association (AAA) has taken a proactive approach. Over the past few months, AAA has been conducting extensive tests on various vehicles, gathering valuable data to improve the performance of these systems.

During these tests, each vehicle was driven an average of 342 miles over a period of 16.2 hours. GPS data, video, and audio were continuously recorded to capture traffic conditions, vehicle behaviour, and driver observations. This data will be instrumental in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of current ADAS systems and identifying areas for improvement.

AAA's focus is particularly on improving cut-in response and lane-centering behaviour. These aspects are crucial for ensuring a smooth and safe driving experience. The organisation has also published expanded and updated recommendations for universal terms for ADAS features in a report titled "Clearing the Confusion".

In addition to improving the performance of ADAS, AAA is also committed to expanding consumer education about these systems. To achieve this, they are collaborating with industry leaders, including automotive manufacturers like Ford and Waymo, as well as technology firms such as Mobileye.

Safety is of utmost importance when it comes to ADAS. Drivers are encouraged to remain in control and be prepared to intervene by braking or steering at all times while using these systems. Eliminating distractions, such as interacting with a smartphone, is also crucial, as the need for driver intervention can be frequent, especially in high traffic areas.

AAA also emphasises the importance of understanding how one's ADAS system operates. Drivers should familiarise themselves with the vehicle owner's manual to learn when, where, and how to use the ADAS system effectively.

These tests were conducted on limited-access highways to evaluate high-traffic situations. AAA partnered with the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center for this purpose. The collaboration aims to pave the way for a safer and more efficient future of autonomous driving.

As the world continues to embrace autonomous driving technology, AAA's efforts towards improving performance and expanding consumer education are commendable. By working with industry leaders, AAA is ensuring that the advancements in this field are made with safety and efficiency in mind.
