Remains of a Jamiat leader found in a river, three days after vanishing in Sunamganj

In the tranquil town of Shantiganj, Sunamganj, a shocking discovery was made on the 5th of September. Maulana Mushtaq Ahmad Gazinagari, a central executive member of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and the vice-president of the Sunamganj district unit of the party, was found dead in a river in the nearby Dirai upazila.

The 52-year-old Maulana Mushtaq, a resident of Gazinagar village under Patharia Union, had been missing since Tuesday, 2nd September. His family members, including his wife, Ruby Begum, repeatedly tried to contact him on his mobile phone, but it remained switched off. On Tuesday night around 10 pm, Maulana Mushtaq left his home in Gazinagar, Shantiganj, saying he was heading to Sunamganj town, but never returned.

The local residents reported the discovery of Maulana Mushtaq's body to the Dirai Police Station. Abdur Razzak, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the station, confirmed the news. The body was later recovered by law enforcement officials and sent to the hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Maulana Mushtaq was the principal of Bormoha Darul Uloom Islamia Arabia Madrasa in Shantiganj upazila. He was actively campaigning as a nomination aspirant for the upcoming national elections from the Sunamganj-3 constituency, which includes the areas of Jagannathpur and Shantiganj.

A protest demanding the safe return of Maulana Mushtaq was held in Shantiganj on the 4th of September.
