Renowned fashion designer, Giorgio Armani, has passed away.
Giorgio Armani, the legendary fashion designer who brought elegance and sophistication to the world of haute couture, passed away on September 4 at the age of 91.
Born in Piacenza near Milan in 1934, Armani grew up in humble circumstances and initially studied medicine before finding his true calling in the world of fashion. He founded his eponymous brand in 1975 together with his life partner Sergio Galeotti, and it has since grown to become a global powerhouse with over 2000 boutiques worldwide.
Armani's designs were timeless, elegant, and never ostentatious. His favourite colour was dark blue, and his dresses were delicate works of art. His breakthrough came in 1980 when Richard Gere wore his suits in "American Gigolo," and he continued to dress some of the most famous names in Hollywood throughout his career.
For decades, Armani trusted Leo Dell'Orco, chief designer of the men's collection, with his most private thoughts. Dell'Orco prefers to stay behind the scenes, but he was a key figure in Armani's empire. At the last Haute Couture show in July 2025, Dell'Orco stood alongside Silvana Armani, Giorgio Armani's niece, who is likely to become the public face of the fashion brand.
The collection was well-received, with perfectly tailored dresses made of flowing fabrics typical of Armani. However, Armani was absent from the show, and it was later revealed that he had passed away shortly before it began. There were standing ovations and moving tributes for the then 90-year-old fashion guru.
Following Armani's death, there is no publicly confirmed information yet about his successor or current chief designer of the Giorgio Armani brand. The company stated that plans for succession exist and an inheritance will be opened following the funeral, but no official announcement about a new chief designer has been made.
In accordance with Mr. Armani's express wish, the funeral will take place in the closest circle of family. The funeral home will be open on September 6 and 7 from 9:00 to 18:00 in Milan at the Armani/Teatro.
Silvana Armani is at retirement age, being 70 years old, but it remains to be seen whether she will take on a larger role in the brand following her uncle's death. The first year brought in 14,000 US dollars in sales, and today it's two billion dollars. Armani's legacy will continue to live on in the world of fashion for years to come.
