"Requires Perseverance: Heino Bolsters Merz's Support Base"
German Singer Heino Voices Support for Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Government
Veteran German singer Heino, known for his ballads and romantic melodies, has waded into the political arena, expressing his support for Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his black-red federal government.
Heino, who is 86 years old, made his comments to the German Press Agency in Cologne in August 2025. Heino's support comes at a time when recent polls have shown a majority of respondents dissatisfied with the coalition's work.
In the ARD "Germany Trend" poll from August, only 29 percent of respondents were satisfied with the coalition's work, a decrease of 10 percentage points compared to the previous month.
Heino's support for Merz's government is not a recent development. Heino campaigned for the CDU during the Bundestag election and has been vocal about his backing for Merz and the black-red federal government led by Merz.
Heino's comments were in response to the change in government following Angela Merkel's rule from 2005 to 2021. Heino believes that the 16 years of Merkel's rule cannot be undone overnight, but he is hopeful that the new government, led by Merz, is determined to address issues.
Heino expressed a desire to vote for Merz's party and stated that patience is necessary regarding the new federal government. He made a comparison of a child falling into a well, suggesting the need to get it out, in reference to the new government.
Despite the challenges facing the new government, Heino believes that it is important to give them credit. Heino stated that he wants to see Olaf Scholz and Robert Habeck leave office, but he also expressed the need to give the new government a chance.
Heino's support for Merz's government is not without controversy. Some have criticised the singer for wading into politics, while others have praised him for speaking out about his political beliefs. Regardless of the criticism, Heino remains steadfast in his support for Merz and the black-red federal government.
Heino's comments come at a critical time for the German government, as it faces numerous challenges, including a struggling economy, rising energy costs, and a refugee crisis. Only time will tell if Heino's support for Merz's government will pay off, but one thing is for certain - the singer is not backing down from his political beliefs.
