In the heart of the Himalayas, Nepal continues to grapple with the devastating aftermath of two powerful earthquakes that struck the country less than a month apart, one year ago. The disasters left a significant portion of the population in need of assistance, and the ongoing struggle is now being documented by Spain-based photographer Omar Havana.
The earthquakes, a 7.8-magnitude quake and a 7.3-magnitude aftershock, caused nearly 9,000 deaths, injured over 22,000, and displaced over one million people. In the aftermath, many historic sites in Nepal, including four World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu valley, were damaged. Tens of thousands of people still lack basic services, and since the earthquakes, 800,000 buildings have been damaged, with many still covered with temporary tarps or uninhabitable.
In the media, football matches and famous people were given more attention than the fight of Nepal against the devastation caused by the earthquakes. Omar Havana, however, has spent considerable time in Nepal, documenting the slow struggle toward recovery through his book project Endurance. His images of the earthquake aftermath were published widely, and his work sheds light on the ongoing struggles of Nepal in the aftermath of the earthquakes.
Omar Havana expresses that the Nepali people were given a lesson on life, but the world did not care anymore about their ongoing struggles in the aftermath of the earthquakes. His book project aims to raise awareness about the ongoing struggles of Nepal, and it is currently available for support on Kickstarter.
Organisations such as "Back to Life", UNICEF, and "Hope Is Life" have played a crucial role in providing immediate aid and supporting the rebuilding of Nepal after the 2015 earthquake. "Back to Life" focused on medical care, distributing survival packages, and rebuilding schools in severely affected areas like Nuwakot district. UNICEF offered emergency relief and long-term support particularly aimed at children, including rebuilding and renovating schools as well as providing medical aid and psychosocial support. "Hope Is Life" also supported Nepal after the 2015 earthquake, assisting local people through collaboration with local groups.
Many villages in Nepal remain devastated due to the earthquakes. The aftermath of the earthquakes has left a significant portion of Nepal's population in need of assistance, and the struggle to rebuild continues. Omar Havana's work serves as a poignant reminder of the heartbreaking earthquake devastation in Nepal and the ongoing struggle of its people.
