Restoration of stones along Freyunger Street
In the picturesque city of Passau, work has commenced on a significant rockfall protection project on Freyunger Straße. The initiative, aimed at safeguarding the general public and avert potential hazards, was initiated due to the risk of rockfall, particularly to the properties below the street.
The project, budgeted at around 500,000 euros, will cover an area of approximately 2,000 m² and extend along a distance of approximately 200 meters. A new rockfall protection fence is being erected between house numbers 16 and 50.
The old fence, which has defects and does not meet traffic safety requirements, is being demolished. In its place, a new fence will be installed with two sections. One section will have an energy absorption of 500 kJ and a height of 4 meters (60 meters), while the other will boast an energy class of 1000 kJ and a height of 5 meters (140 meters).
To anchor the protective fence, approximately 70 boreholes will be drilled. Additionally, around 200 meters of rockfall protection fence and about 500 m² of spiral cable netting will be installed.
For the foundation of the new fence, clearing work is necessary. This work was also carried out during the last rock stabilization work on the Oberhausberg in 2020, where a dilapidated fence was demolished and debris was transported away by helicopter, along with the removal of loose rocks.
It is worth noting that the city of Passau currently has 22 ownerless properties. Since these properties do not have owners, the responsibility for the rock stabilization work lies with the city as the safety authority.
Once all preparations are complete, the new rockfall protection fence elements and supports will be flown in by helicopter. The entire project is expected to take approximately three months, depending on weather conditions.
Passau, known for its rich history and beautiful architecture, is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of its citizens and visitors. The rockfall protection work on Freyunger Straße is a testament to the city's commitment to maintaining a secure and thriving environment.
