In the heart of Davao City, a small family operation has grown into a thriving chocolate business, now known as Cacao de Davao. At the helm of this success story is Ethan Kyle Lim, the business lead of the brand.

Cacao de Davao was founded in 2013 by Lim's grandfather, and since then, it has come a long way. What started as a small business producing tablea for local customers has now expanded into a brand offering nearly 50 chocolate products, including traditional and daring flavors.

Lim, with a degree in Marketing Management, stepped in with new ideas that expanded the brand into various cities. He remains optimistic about the future of Cacao de Davao, believing that quick adjustments to obstacles are key to success.

One of the biggest challenges facing the cacao industry is the rising production costs, unpredictable climate conditions, and increasing competition. However, Lim acknowledges these challenges and is working diligently to overcome them. He believes that supporting local farmers is essential to the success of Cacao de Davao.

Cacao de Davao sources beans from its own farm and directly from smallholders in Davao City. Lim is expanding the brand's digital presence, with a strong presence on Facebook, Instagram, Shopee, Lazada, and a TikTok shop soon to be launched. He is also partnering with the Department of Trade and Industry to explore opportunities for exporting finished Cacao de Davao products.

Lim's vision is to see Davao recognised worldwide as a producer of chocolate that can stand proudly among the best in the world. To this end, Cacao de Davao is planning to open a 600-square-meter showroom in Davao City, designed to provide a complete bean-to-bar experience.

The Davao Region produces about 80% of the countryโ€™s cacao, but production has faced challenges in recent years. Local councils and private players like Lim are working together to protect the cacao industry and ensure the success of farmers.

Lim stays connected to his roots, participating in community talks to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs and farmers, and has been invited to share his journey at Ateneo de Davao and on various programs. He is also looking to take Cacao de Davao's global expansion further, aiming to share the story of Davao's farmers and their dedication.

Lim's aspirations for Cacao de Davao are not limited to the local market. He dreams of having Cacao de Davao chocolates available in airport shelves, making Davao's chocolate a global favourite. With his passion, vision, and commitment to the local community, it seems that Lim is well on his way to achieving his goals.
