Retired Sergeant Michael Verardo Honoured in Moving Funeral Service

Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Michael Verardo, who dedicated 15 years of resilience, over 100 surgeries, and countless hours of therapy to recovery after a catastrophic wound in Afghanistan in 2010, was laid to rest on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. The funeral service took place at Weddington Methodist Church, with a star-studded guest list in attendance.

Michael Verardo's legacy within the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, and the veteran community was profound. His resilience and dedication inspired many, including The Independence Fund's programs. His impact on the lives of veterans and their families was felt far and wide.

John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting performed at the service, a poignant tribute to the life of a man who had touched so many. Members of the United States Congress, including Governor Josh Stein, were in attendance, as were members of the North Carolina General Assembly.

Distinguished guests included the 48th Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence, U.S. Senator Thom Tillis, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins, Chief National Security Correspondent, Fox News, Jennifer Griffin, and members of the 82nd Airborne Division. A delegation from the White House was also expected.

The service featured performances by the 82nd Airborne Chorus, a fitting tribute to a man who forged enduring support networks for America's wartime allies. Michael Verardo is survived by his wife, Sarah, and their three daughters, Grace, Mary Scott, and Elizabeth.

Credentialed members of the media were welcome to attend both the funeral service and the procession for Michael Verardo. Governor Josh Stein had ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across North Carolina on Tuesday, in honor of the fallen hero.

Michael Verardo's life was a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of resilience. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched and in the programs he inspired. Rest in peace, Sergeant Verardo.
