Revamped Turntable Transformed into a Minimal Aluminum Altar for Devoted Vinyl Worshippers

The Paris-based studio Waiting for Ideas, founded by Jean-Baptiste Anotin in 2021, has recently revealed a remarkable piece of audio equipment - the PP-1 turntable. This innovative device, carved from a solid square of aluminium, is designed to reduce vinyl to its essential essence as a physical object that's placed on a pedestal to worship.

The PP-1 eschews conventional design elements, such as a tone arm, in favour of a minimalist aesthetic. Instead, the needle is set below the platter, protected by a cover. This design choice emphasizes the ritual nature of record playing and the tactile experience of vinyl, as the studio describes it as an object for those who want to 'feel the music'.

The platter of the PP-1 is countersunk into the aluminium body, making any disc appear flush with the surface. To use the PP-1, the disc must be placed down face up, i.e. the side you don't want to play. The PP-1's concealed mechanism is capable of detecting whether it's a 33 or 45 RPM record, although the method is unclear.

In line with its minimalist ethos, the PP-1 boasts minimal controls and outputs. To complement this design, Waiting for Ideas has designed a pair of accompanying speakers. These speakers have an identical footprint to the record player and are fully wrapped in black fabric, adding a cohesive aesthetic to any setup.

The PP-1 turntable and its accompanying speakers are not just pieces of equipment; they are objects that invite you to engage with music in a unique and immersive way. The studio, with its diverse portfolio that includes retail space projects and artist collaborations, continues to push the boundaries of design and audio technology.

For those who appreciate the tactile, ritualistic nature of vinyl record playing, the PP-1 turntable offers a compelling proposition. It's a testament to Waiting for Ideas' commitment to creating innovative and thought-provoking designs that challenge traditional notions of audio equipment.
