Review of 'Erupcja': Charli XCX Shines with Charm in a Subtle, Captivating Tribute to Travel, Camaraderie, and Tenderness

In the latest film by director Pete Ohs, "Erupcja," pop sensation Charli XCX delivers a captivating performance as Bethany, a party-loving character seeking deeper truth. The film, with its casual, slice-of-life vibe and novelistic quality, follows Bethany and her girlfriend Nel (Lena Góra) on a romantic getaway in Warsaw.

The couple's story begins on a class trip when Bethany was a teenager, where she first met Nel. Since then, they've had a habit of abandoning their responsibilities for partying and mischief. This time, however, their antics threaten to disrupt a surprise marriage proposal from Bethany's devoted boyfriend, Rob (Will Madden).

Rob, a seemingly patient and charming character, has planned a romantic getaway in Warsaw, with the intention of proposing to Bethany. However, upon waking up, he finds Bethany in the kitchen making coffee, and she reveals that she's spent the night with Nel instead.

Jeremy O. Harris plays the role of Claude, a friendly and sociable American painter who adds colour to the narrative. Lena Góra delivers a complex, internal performance as Nel, stealing scenes when she's alone. Jacek Zubiel narrates the film, switching seamlessly between Polish and English.

Agata Trzebuchowska plays Ula, a character who refuses to accept sub-par treatment and serves as a contrast to the heteronormative dynamic of the film. Bethany's character in the film mirrors Charli XCX's existential themes in her most recent album, Brat.
