Review of 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' - Farewell Tour, Running on Empty

In theatres now, "The Conjuring: Last Rites" is the latest addition to the popular Conjuring series, produced by New Line Cinema and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Directed by Michael Chaves, the film follows real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, respectively.

Set in 1986, the film opens with a flashback to 1964, when Ed and a pregnant Lorraine Warren pursue their first demonic case. Fast forward to the present day, and the Warrens are giving a lecture about their work in a near-empty auditorium.

The storyline of "The Conjuring: Last Rites" revolves around the Smurl family in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, whose lives are affected by a possessed mirror. The film features scenes of paranormal activity, including a candle blowing out, a toy doll moving on its own, and a mysterious figure lurking in the shadows.

Judy, a character in the film, shares the same gift/curse of sussing out ghosts and demons as her mother but lacks the skills to fend them off. Her boyfriend Tony, unfortunately, is not useful for demon hunting. The film delivers half-hearted scares that are hard to recall once the credits roll, but Judy's struggles and her teaming up with her parents "Avengers: Endgame" style to defeat a demon provide a unique twist.

"The Conjuring: Last Rites" is rated R for bloody/violent content and terror. The film's runtime is 2 hours and 15 minutes, and it centers on the Warrens' final case, making it the fourth film in the Conjuring series and the ninth entry in the Conjuring universe.

Despite living in the shadows of his franchise predecessor James Wan, Michael Chaves delivers a solid directing performance. Farmiga brings more emotional weight as Lorraine Warren, struggling with the constant burden of protecting Judy.

The trailer for "The Conjuring: Last Rites" has already been released, promising a thrilling ride for fans of the series. With its mix of suspense, horror, and family dynamics, "The Conjuring: Last Rites" is a must-watch for any horror enthusiast. So, grab your popcorn and get ready for a chilling experience at your local cinema.
