Revisiting the Spinning Top Chair Design
In 1978, British engineer Morley Kert showcased his self-built swivel chair, a design that has since undergone several transformations. The first attempt at Kert's spinning chair, however, did not inspire much confidence in its spinning mechanism nor did it boast an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Fast forward to the present day, and Kert's spinning chair has evolved significantly. The majority of the current version is left raw, with the final shape being manually carved. This manual craftsmanship is evident in the 3D carving that adorns some surfaces of the chair.
Kert's initial attempts at building a spinning chair also extended to exploring the possibilities of 3D printed chairs. However, the current version of the chair is constructed from CNC milled plywood, a decision that has not only simplified the assembly process but also reduced the material cost.
The assembly process of the current version is made straightforward due to the use of hidden dowels, ensuring a smooth fit for each layer. The chair's base has been hollowed out, allowing the use of only four and a half sheets of 3/4 inch plywood.
The finishing touches on the chair involve wood varnish and a substantial amount of sanding. After much practice, the carving process resulted in a well-shaped and professional-looking chair.
Interestingly, Kert's mission does not stop at the spinning chair. He aims to create less expensive versions of high-end designer furniture, although specific details about his future projects remain scarce.
The total material cost of the finished chair comes in under $500, making it an affordable option for those seeking unique, handcrafted furniture. With its intriguing history and affordable price tag, Kert's spinning chair continues to turn heads in the world of design.
