Revitalizing Aquatic Ecosystems: Wetland Rejuvenation at Ilketshall St. Lawrence Green

In the heart of Suffolk, a cherished area of common land, Ilketshall St. Lawrence Green, has undergone a remarkable transformation. The Green, known for its support of local wildlife and biodiversity, is now home to a thriving pond that has been restored after years of deterioration.

The project, which was completed in September 2024, safeguards a valuable County Wildlife Site. Over the years, the pond had been affected by natural succession and sediment build-up, causing it to dry out seasonally.

Graham Hart, a Conservation Adviser at Suffolk Wildlife Trust, played a role in the restoration project. Graham provides support and advice for Private Nature Reserves and County Wildlife Sites across the county.

The restoration plan focused on desilting, removing invasive willow, reprofiling the banks, and managing surrounding tree cover. This extensive work involved mechanical desilting, bank reprofiling, willow and tree removal, silt redistribution, and creation of log piles.

The restored pond now offers a vibrant mix of shallow and deeper areas, supporting a wide range of aquatic flora and fauna. Marginal plants in the restored pond will provide seed-rich vegetation for Turtle Doves, a priority species in Suffolk due to significant population declines, and foraging grounds for bats.

The transformation of Ilketshall St. Lawrence Green Pond is an example of ecological restoration succeeding through community, conservation, and collaboration. Gaining the support of the landowner, local stakeholders, and utility providers was essential for the project.

Moreover, the restoration project enhances recreational and educational opportunities for local residents. The Green, located in Ilketshall St. Lawrence, Suffolk, is a cherished area of common land that supports local wildlife and biodiversity.

In 2023, a grant application was submitted to National Highways' Networks for Nature (N4N) programme for the restoration of the pond. Severe storms and flooding in autumn 2023, followed by a wet winter, delayed the project until September 2024.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust is proud to support initiatives like this that help nature thrive. The restoration of Ilketshall St. Lawrence Green Pond is a testament to the power of collective effort in preserving and enhancing our natural heritage.
