The public health community is facing a critical juncture, as concerns over the perception of their communication style and the erosion of public support have come to the forefront.

Recent criticisms suggest that the public health community's approach has been perceived as judgmental and condescending, a dynamic that could be detrimental in regaining the public's trust. According to Katelyn Jetelina, the biggest challenge for the public health community is fighting for the truth, a task that becomes more arduous when the messenger is not seen as approachable.

The U.S. health care sector has been underperforming compared to nine peer countries, as revealed in a recent report. This underperformance, coupled with a lower life expectancy, higher rates of preventable and treatable deaths, and a significant excess of Covid-19 deaths for those under 75, has raised concerns about the effectiveness of current public health strategies.

The 2024 election saw a divide among voters, with just under 50% choosing a presidential campaign that resisted public health efforts. This political polarisation poses a significant challenge for the public health community, as future elections may see more antagonistic leadership if nothing changes.

In an effort to bridge this divide, public health leaders are advised to be humble in their approach. This means avoiding patronising framing of issues, such as science versus anti-science, or health versus anti-health. Instead, they should strive to engage in open, respectful dialogue that recognises the complexities and nuances of the issues at hand.

The incoming administration is expected to present a shift in approach, with potential policies that may take public health "back a few steps," according to Georges Benjamin. However, it is important to note that science is knowledge of the world, while policy tackles political problems and does not automatically lead to prescriptions.

In a positive development, recent petitions urge senators to prioritise science and the well-being of Americans. Furthermore, two states raised their minimum wage, and paid sick leave was approved in three states (Missouri, Alaska, and Nebraska), indicating a growing recognition of the importance of worker health and well-being.

The election results were close, with just under 230,000 votes changing the presidential outcome. This underscores the importance of the public health community's role in educating and informing the public, and the need for a more effective, empathetic approach to communication.

As the public health community moves forward, it is crucial to remember that the health of all depends on their ability to gain the public's support. This can only be achieved through humility, an end to name-calling, and a commitment to understanding and addressing the concerns and needs of the public.
