Rising backing for local movie theaters in Hamburg
Hamburg is set to become a major player in the local cinema industry, with a series of positive developments announced this year.
The Cologne Film Festival is set to be held in Hamburg from 2026, merging with the Filmtheater Congress "Kino" as a joint industry event. This expansion forms part of the expanded Film Festival in Hamburg, known as the "Industry Days", which will take place from September 29 to October 2, 2025.
The "Industry Days" will include the European Work in Progress and the International Film Distribution Summit, further cementing Hamburg's role as a hub for film and media. The event is expected to attract big cinema to the city.
Helge Albers, Managing Director of Moin Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, announced an increase in the budget to support Hamburg's independent cinema landscape through the Moin Kinobonus. The funding has been increased by €100,000, totalling €200,000, in August 2025.
The Moin Kinobonus, whose budget has been increased by the Federal Ministry of Culture and Media, aims to support and celebrate the commitment of independent cinemas in Hamburg. Cinemas can receive a maximum bonus of 10,000 euros each.
Hamburg is known for supporting creative talent in the film industry. The independent cinemas in the city are the heart of its film culture. The additional funding will be awarded as part of the Hamburg Film Prizes, to be presented on September 8, 2025, at the Filmkunsttheater magazine.
The Hamburg Short Film Festival, considered Germany's fairest festival, is not mentioned as being held in 2025. However, the city's commitment to supporting the film industry remains unwavering. With the Film Festival's expansion and the increased funding, Hamburg is strengthening its position as a film and media hub.
