Rising participation of primary schools in the charity breakfast program run by breadtime e.V. organization
In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), a unique project is underway to ensure that students start their school day on a full stomach. BrotZeit e.V., a non-profit organisation, is at the helm of this initiative, generously funded by the state of NRW and supported by the Schaffrath Foundation for Social Affairs.
The project is coordinated by Vanessa Kolb, Education Manager in the ESF-funded Bildungskommune project. Early morning volunteers play a crucial role in this endeavour, providing healthy and adequate nutrition, fostering integration, school culture, belonging, and a genuine welcome culture.
The programme has already begun at three elementary schools - GGS Erich-Kästner, GGS Carl-Sonnenschein, and EGS Pahlkestraße - with more schools set to join in the coming school year. LIDL, a generous contributor, donates more than 30 different food items for the meals.
The initiative is highly valued by both students and teachers. Students report that the breakfast allows them to participate more effectively in class and gives them energy for physical education and recess. They perceive the volunteers as friendly, respectful, warm, and helpful. Many children enjoy the exchange with their peers during breakfast.
One in five children in Germany start their school day with an empty stomach, a statistic that this project aims to address. By the end of 2025, a total of seven schools will receive a free, daily breakfast program for their students.
Schools are responsible for ensuring engaged participation and organisation in the project. At the city level, Vanessa Kolb is the contact person for the project. Interested parties can contact Barbara Materne of BrotZeit e.V. directly.
The only area where students desire more variety is in the food offerings. However, the long-term support provided by BrotZeit e.V. ensures that this aspect will be addressed in the future.
Engaged individuals aged 55+ are welcome to join the project. The breakfast program not only alleviates hunger but also fosters social interaction, making it a win-win for everyone involved.
