Rivers State's Governor, Wike, announces that the state of emergency can be lifted, as the coast appears to be safe

In a recent development, Minister Nyesom Wike has announced that the coast is clear for the state of emergency to be lifted in Rivers State. The state of emergency was declared by President Bola Tinubu earlier this year due to a political crisis involving Governor Sim Fubara, the House of Assembly members, and Minister Wike himself.

President Tinubu, in his decision, suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly for six months. Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas was appointed as a Sole Administrator in Rivers State to oversee the state's affairs during the emergency period.

In his statement, Minister Wike did not mention any specific actions or decisions taken by President Tinubu or Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas in the context of the state of emergency. However, he expressed that the state government has representatives at the grassroots level and that the coast is clear for the state of emergency to be lifted.

Minister Wike also stated that the state of emergency is expected to end on September 18. With the expiration of the state of emergency, the Rivers State Assembly is expected to resume its duties. The sole administrator appointed by President Tinubu to replace the Governor of Rivers State if the state of emergency ends on September 18 is Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd).

Interestingly, Minister Wike did not discuss the political situation involving Governor Sim Fubara, the House of Assembly members, and himself. He also did not provide any updates on the political crisis that led to the declaration of the state of emergency.

However, Minister Wike did express that the election in Rivers State, as described by him, was conducted peacefully. He also did not mention any issues or concerns regarding the peaceful election or the impending end of the state of emergency.

Overall, the announcement by Minister Wike signals a potential end to the state of emergency in Rivers State. With the state government and local government in place, and the Rivers State Assembly expected to resume its duties, the state is moving towards normalcy. More updates on the situation will be provided as they become available.
