Roadway Commemorating the Previous Outer Camp of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp

A poignant memorial commemorating the Italian military internees who were imprisoned and forced to labour at the Neugraben sub-camp of KZ-Neuengamme during World War II will be dedicated on April 14, 2023.

Located next to the "Neugrabener Heideweg" bus stop at Falkenbergsweg, the memorial takes the form of a granite boulder with a memorial plaque and an information board. This memorial was created through a collaboration between Gymnasium Süderelbe, the Süderelbe Cultural House, and the project group Italian Military Interned.

The sub-camp served as a sub-camp of KZ-Neuengamme from September 1944, housing approximately 500 women. The foundations of the barracks where prisoners were housed can still be seen on the former camp grounds.

Gunter Buck from the Süderelbe History Workshop will lead a guided tour on the day of the memorial dedication, discussing the research on this chapter in Neugraben's history and the future use of the grounds. The guided tour, which is free of charge, will take place at 2:30 PM, meeting point: Neugrabener Heideweg bus stop (Falkenbergsweg). No registration is required.

The tour will explain the development of the grounds in the 1940s and describe the fate of the prisoners. Only a granite boulder with a memorial plaque and an information board remain on the former sub-camp grounds as reminders. The information board at Falkenbergsweg is the only other reminder of the sub-camp of KZ-Neuengamme at the Falkenbergsweg in Neugraben.

The organization "Italian Military Interned" is involved in creating the memorial stone. They commemorate the history of the Neugraben subcamps of the Neuengamme concentration camp by remembering the suffering and forced internment of Italian military personnel who were prisoners in these subcamps during World War II.

The Harburg District Office: Local Partnerships for Democracy Süderelbe funded the creation of the memorial. Gunter Buck has researched the history of the Neugraben sub-camp of KZ-Neuengamme together with Heiner and Karin Schultz in the 1980s and 1990s.

Join us on April 14, 2023, to honour the memory of those who suffered at the Neugraben sub-camp of KZ-Neuengamme.
