Robert Wilson has passed away.
In a heartbreaking announcement, the team of Robert M. Wilson, a pioneer in the world of avant-garde theater, confirmed his passing at the age of 83 on Thursday in Water Mill, New York. Until the end, Wilson continued to work passionately on new projects.
Born on October 4, 1941, in Waco, Texas, Wilson's journey led him to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he studied architecture. However, his true calling was in the realm of theater, where he would leave an indelible mark.
Wilson's unique style, characterized by precise light, strict composition, and an unmistakable, almost meditative tempo, found favor at major opera houses around the world. His works, known for their rigor as well as their magical visual language, earned him the title of one of the most important innovators of modern music theater.
Wilson was particularly influential in Europe, with productions at the Berlin Schaubühne, collaborations with poet Heiner Müller, and works like The Black Rider shaping his artistic reputation in the German-speaking world. His influence extended to generations of opera creators.
One of Wilson's most famous productions is the opera Einstein on the Beach, created with Philip Glass. This groundbreaking work gained worldwide fame at the 1976 Avignon Festival and was performed until the 2010s.
Wilson premiered works of contemporary composers and staged numerous works from the opera canon in new ways, including Wagner's Parsifal, Puccini's Madama Butterfly, and Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann. He worked with renowned directors, composers, and singers, including Jessye Norman, Tom Waits, and Lou Reed.
For many opera lovers, Wilson's name stands for opening the opera to new artistic forms of expression and for dialogue between the arts. Beyond his own work, Wilson inspired generations of artists as a stage designer, lighting designer, and visual artist.
The Watermill Center he founded on Long Island remains a significant legacy as a laboratory for interdisciplinary art. Wilson was honored many times for his life's work, including with the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2014.
Wilson succumbed to a brief, severe illness. His loss is a significant one for the international theater and opera scene, which he shaped over the decades with his unique style that combined theater, visual arts, music, light, and movement.
