Roda honors its global citizens
In the charming town of Roda, located in San Javier, the annual festival weekend took place, showcasing the town's welcoming and inclusive spirit. This year, the highlight was the International Day event, now in its 13th year and known as the 'English breakfast.'
The event was meticulously organised and executed by Grupo No Balanco D’Angola, hosted by Contra Mestre Sergio Bittencort Ferreira. The day began with a hearty English breakfast, prepared and served by the foreign community of Roda. More than 400 people gathered in Roda's pine grove to enjoy bacon, sausages, fried eggs, beans, mushrooms, and other traditional English breakfast dishes.
Phoebe Liddiard, an English resident of Roda for 11 years, spoke at the event, sharing her experiences and the importance of such gatherings in fostering a sense of community. The day's programme continued with a grilled hamburger dinner, followed by traditional festival activities such as a procession and a sardinada.
The English breakfast was initially a way to include English residents in the local festivities, but over the years, it has grown into an event called International Day, welcoming Irish, Scottish, and other European residents who have made Roda their home. The event was graced by the presence of Mayor José Miguel Luengo and councillor Isabel Madrid, who expressed their support for Roda's welcoming attitude towards international residents.
The festival activities continued to highlight Roda's welcoming attitude, culminating in a mass held in honour of the town's patron saint, the Virgin of Los Remedios. Lourdes Sánchez, president of the festival committee, explained the origins of the English breakfast event, emphasising its role in bringing the community together.
Music played throughout the day, adding to the festive atmosphere, and the event was a testament to Roda's commitment to celebrating its diversity and fostering a sense of unity among its residents. The International Day event during the Annual Festivals Weekend in Roda is a shining example of a small town embracing its international community, making everyone feel at home.
