Romania reveals proposed legislation enabling youth to partake in a four-month military training period on a voluntary basis

Euronews Romania reports that the Romanian government is set to enact the Defense Law and the Law on Preparing the Population for Defense, as announced by the Minister of National Defence.

According to the minister, these draft laws aim to prepare the population for potential crises and strengthen the Romanian Army. Young people between the ages of 18 and 35 will have the opportunity to volunteer for a period of four months.

During the training period, volunteers will receive a monthly payment of RON 2,000-3,000 (EUR 400-600). The minister emphasized that such exercises happen periodically and are normal in any army around the world.

The minister also mentioned that women can also volunteer for the military training. He clarified that no one is being called to the army, and the army is not taking anyone by force into the military.

New rounds of the MOBEX mobilization exercise will take place in September and October, reuniting voluntary reservists in several counties. The exercise will take place in Sibiu and Mureș in September and in Bucharest and Ilfov in October.

Volunteers from these mobilization deployments will be recruited to become permanent cadres of the Romanian Army. Some volunteers may choose to stay and become professional soldiers if they are suitable and willing. After the four months, volunteers will be able to enter the operational reserve of the Romanian Army.

The minister stated that the Army must know the address and territorial commissariat of the operational reserve volunteers. He also emphasized that these exercises are not preparations for war, as some have claimed. Rather, they are designed to prepare the population for potential crises and strengthen the Romanian Army.
