Former Senator John Schickel to Speak at Florence Rotary Club

On September 8, the Rotary Club of Florence will host a special event featuring former Senator John Schickel. The meeting will take place at the Northern Kentucky Area Development District offices, located at 22 Spiral Dr in Florence.

John Schickel, a lifelong public servant from Northern Kentucky, served as a Kentucky State Senator representing Boone County from 2009 to 2019. Before his tenure in the Senate, Schickel began his career in law enforcement with the Florence Police Department and later served as Boone County Jailer from 1987 to 2001, where he modernized local corrections.

During his time as Boone County Jailer, Schickel witnessed the impact of Northern Kentucky's population growth and the rising opioid crisis. His speech will discuss these topics, as well as the suburban boom of Northern Kentucky in the 1980s and '90s, and the evolution of law enforcement and criminal justice in our region.

Schickel's career journey didn't stop there. He also served as a U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Kentucky, where he gained federal-level insight into drug enforcement, court security, and the justice system in post-9/11 America. As a U.S. Marshal, Schickel remained a vocal advocate for law and order, government transparency, and preserving Kentucky's heritage.

In 2009, Schickel was elected to the Kentucky Senate, where he continued to advocate for these principles. His speech on September 8 will cover his career journey from Florence Law Enforcement to public policy in Frankfort, and will address how federal and state policies have shaped local communities.

The meeting will begin at 12 p.m., with a lunch buffet available at 11:45 a.m. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP online. A live stream of the meeting will be available through the Florence Rotary Youtube page for those who cannot attend in person.
