Rumors verified: Sandbox announces staff reductions and leadership shifts
The virtual world of The Sandbox, once a bustling hub for creators and players, has seen a significant shift in its fortunes. Longtime community member Cagyjan has described the recent restructuring as a "shutdown," reflecting the current state of the platform.
The Sandbox's Alpha Season 5 concluded in style, distributing over $1 million in rewards in the form of SAND tokens and NFTs. However, the SAND token, the platform's native currency, has taken a steep dive. It has fallen 97% from its 2021 peak of $8.40, and the market cap has shrunk from a staggering $6.8 billion to a more modest $687 million.
Despite the decline, The Sandbox's Game Client 0.12 update was recently launched, introducing several new features. However, the platform attracts only "a few hundred daily users, mostly bots," according to reports. This low user count could be attributed to the heavy spending on celebrity partnerships with Snoop Dogg and Paris Hilton, which Cagyjan criticised as misguided.
The current CEO of The Sandbox is Robby Yung, an executive at Animoca Brands, who took over the role in August 2025 during a major company restructuring. The co-founders moved to strategic roles such as chairman and global ambassador as part of this restructuring.
When asked about speculation regarding a memecoin project, The Sandbox declined to comment. The SAND token is currently priced at $0.28, a far cry from its former glory.
Reports suggest that The Sandbox has burned through $300 million on development over eight years. Despite these challenges, the platform continues to evolve, introducing new features and seeking to regain its former prominence in the metaverse.
