Russell's massive onslaught on Ukraine: 800 drones and disguises
In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Russia launched the largest drone and missile attack of the war so far against Ukraine on the night of September 6–7, 2025. The attack targeted Kyiv, the capital city, with over 800 drones and rockets, marking the second mass attack in two weeks.
The assault claimed at least two lives, including a one-year-old child, and injured dozens across the nation. Among the fatalities was a tragic incident in the capital, where two people lost their lives due to debris from a downed drone that set fire to the Cabinet of Ministers building in the city center.
The Cabinet of Ministers building, the home of Ukraine's government, was damaged for the first time by an enemy attack, affecting the roof and upper floors. Associated Press reporters witnessed a plume of smoke rising from the building's roof.
Russian drone debris also struck two residential buildings: a nine-story building in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi district and a four-story building in Darnytskyi district.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that two additional people were killed and 15 were injured in the drone attack. In response to the attack, Ukraine shot down and neutralized 747 drones and 74 missiles, according to a statement from the Air Force. Debris from shot-down drones and missiles fell on eight locations.
There were nine missile hits and 56 drone strikes in 37 locations across Ukraine. Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesperson for Ukraine's Air Force, confirmed that Sunday's attack was the largest Russian drone strike.
Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated that the government building was damaged for the first time by an enemy attack. She called on the world to take action beyond words, specifically strengthening sanctions against Russian oil and gas.
The attack occurred after European leaders pressured Russian leader Vladimir Putin to work towards ending the war, with 26 of Ukraine's allies pledging to deploy troops as a "reassurance force" for Ukraine once the fighting ends.
In the face of this escalation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed readiness to meet Putin to negotiate a peace agreement and urged US President Donald Trump to impose punishing sanctions on Russia to push it to end the war.
