Russian forces launch daytime assault on a market in Donetsk
In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, recent developments have seen a surge in drone attacks and military movements. As of early August 2025, Russia is reported to have nearly completed the seizure of Chasiv Yar after a 26-month advance from Bakhmut, potentially opening new avenues for attacking Ukraine's defensive positions in Donetsk Oblast. However, evidence suggests Russian forces have not yet fully reached the western boundary of Chasiv Yar.
Ukrainian forces, meanwhile, have made advances in eastern Zaporizhia Oblast and near Lyman and Velykomykhailivka, while Russia made some progress near Lyman, Chasiv Yar, Toretsk, and Pokrovsk. July 2025 saw a record number of Russian drone and missile launches into Ukraine—about 6,443 projectiles, a 13% increase over June. Despite a significant Ukrainian interception rate, many still penetrate defenses, causing substantial damage.
The Iranian-designed Shahed drones, rebranded by Russia as Geran, continue to be the main tool for nightly bombardments of Kyiv and other cities, forcing civilians to take shelter regularly. A recent Russian drone and missile strike on Kyiv caused building collapses and civilian casualties, including a 6-year-old child.
Ukrainian drone operations have also inflicted damage inside Russia, with attacks targeting and igniting fires at key infrastructure sites in Volgograd and Penza regions, including a major supplier of battlefield systems used by Russian forces. Russian authorities have confirmed Ukrainian drone incursions into the Volgograd region.
Diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire are active but face strong resistance from the Kremlin. Former US President Donald Trump, who has sent a special envoy to pressure Russia toward a ceasefire, has shortened a deadline for progress to 10 days. However, Russian leadership, including Vladimir Putin, is reportedly not ready for serious peace negotiations, using nuclear threats and rhetoric as part of a cognitive campaign against US-led peace efforts.
In an effort to bolster Ukraine's defense, the USA and NATO are working on a new model for delivering US weapons to Ukraine. NATO allies are financing the purchases or transfers, while Ukraine prioritizes the weapons it needs in tranches of around 500 million dollars. In response to provocative remarks by former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, US President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines.
Poland's intelligence agency has also arrested a foreign national suspected of espionage, who is an officer from the military intelligence service of a post-Soviet Central Asian state.
The conflict remains dynamic, with ongoing Russian military advances in eastern Ukraine, unprecedented Russian drone and missile barrages causing widespread damage, and Ukrainian counterattacks penetrating Russian territory via drones. The future of peace in the region remains uncertain as diplomatic efforts face strong resistance from the Kremlin.
