Russia's Military Gains Strategic Advantage Along Three Fronts, According to Commander of Ukrainian Armed Forces

In recent weeks, tensions in Eastern Ukraine have escalated significantly, with both Ukrainian and Russian forces engaging in a series of confrontations.

On September 7, Russian missiles and drones rained down across Ukraine, targeting several high-rise buildings in Kiev according to emergency services. The attacks resulted in the death of four people and set government offices in the capital ablaze. Russia claimed to have struck a plant and a logistics hub in Kiev, with no other targets within Kiev's boundaries being targeted, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the importance of a broad response from partners to this attack. He believes a strong response from America is needed, and he discussed the attack with French President Emmanuel Macron, stating that France would help Ukraine strengthen its defense.

Zelensky is not alone in his calls for action. The European Union, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has officially called for intensified sanctions against Russia, including against banks, the energy sector, and cryptocurrency use to bypass sanctions. The EU is working on a 19th package of sanctions and aims for coordinated EU-US and G7 sanctions to maximize pressure.

The onslaught against Ukraine by Russia has intensified since the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, which failed to make any breakthrough on a ceasefire. Russian forces have been steadily advancing in eastern Ukraine for months, according to analysis of data provided by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Oleksandr Syrsky, a Ukrainian military commander, stated that Russian forces are using the tactic of 'creeping' advancement with small infantry groups, trying to infiltrate settlements, and avoiding direct combat.

Despite these advances, Ukrainian forces have not been idle. They have regained control over 58 square kilometers and several small settlements. However, Russia now occupies around 20 percent of Ukraine.

Russia denies targeting civilians in Ukraine, but Zelensky stated that Putin is "testing the world" with his actions. He has urged the international community to respond strongly to Russia's aggression. The future of Eastern Ukraine remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the conflict is far from over.
