Saarland's Patria-Panzer Manufacturing Faces Upcoming Obstacle - Saarland's Patria-Tank production advances to the next step
In a significant development for the German armament industry, the Bundestag's Defense Committee has approved the construction of a pilot model for a Patria transport tank at KNDS in Freisen-Schwarzerden, Saarland, with a budget of 32 million euros. This decision is seen as a crucial milestone towards a potential billion-dollar production of the transport tank at the same location.
KNDS, an armament industry company currently employing around 700 people in Freisen, is responsible for repairing and upgrading military vehicles. The company is now actively considering the production of 1,000 to around 3,000 Patria armored personnel carriers for the Bundeswehr.
The production of the Patria tank at the Saarland site of Freisen could further enhance the importance of Saarland as an armament location. If the Bundestag decides positively, this could lead to the creation of many new jobs in the region. KNDS had announced in October 2024 that it plans to hire up to 300 new employees in the next three years if the Bundestag decides in favor of the Finnish Patria model as the successor to the Fuchs transport tank.
Saarland's Minister of Economy, Jürgen Barke (SPD), stated that this decision is an important intermediate step for the production of the Patria tank in Saarland. He also emphasised that this decision will sustainably secure the Saarland location and create further industrial jobs in northern Saarland.
The final decision on the overall order for production and maintenance is expected from the Budget Committee "very soon". If approved, this decision opens up immense growth prospects for the armament industry in both production and maintenance, where Saarland has recognised expertise.
The Defense Committee's approval is not only significant for the production of the Patria tank but also for the future of KNDS in Freisen. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) announced during a visit in mid-September 2024 that, subject to the Bundestag's decision on a correct award decision, one plans to manufacture and maintain the Fuchs successor in series in the company in the district of St. Wendel.
Christopher Salm, the armament officer of the CDU state parliamentary fraction, also expressed his support for the decision. He believes that this decision will secure the Saarland location and create further industrial jobs in northern Saarland.
The municipality of Freisen, in the district of St. Wendel, is in close exchange with KNDS for the development of additional areas. This suggests that the potential for growth in the region is not limited to the armament industry but could extend to other sectors as well.
In conclusion, the approval of the Defense Committee for the construction of a pilot model for the Patria transport tank at KNDS in Freisen-Schwarzerden is a significant step towards potentially thousands of new jobs in Saarland's armament industry. The final decision from the Budget Committee is eagerly awaited.
