Manufacturing of Patria-Panzer advancing steadily in Saarland - Saarland's production of Patria-Panzer advances to the next level
Germany's Defense Conglomerate Nears Production of Patria Tank in Saarland
The defense conglomerate KNDS is moving closer to producing a Patria transport tank in the town of Freisen, Saarland. This development, if approved by the Bundestag, could create hundreds of new jobs and enhance Saarland's significance as a defense location.
In October 2024, KNDS Germany Maintenance announced that new job opportunities could be created as a result of the production of the Patria tank in Saarland. Currently, KNDS employs around 700 people in Freisen, and they plan to hire up to 300 new employees in the next three years if the Bundestag decides in favor of the Finnish Patria model.
Saarland's Minister of Economics, Jürgen Barke (SPD), considers this decision an important intermediate step for the production of the Patria tank in Saarland. The municipalities, including Freisen, are in close exchange with KNDS for the development of additional areas.
The Defense Committee of the Bundestag has already approved the construction of a pilot model for the Patria tank for 32 million euros. This decision is considered a significant milestone towards a billion-dollar production of a transport tank at KNDS in Freisen-Schwarzerden.
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced during a visit in mid-September 2024 that the successor to the Fuchs transport tank could be planned for serial production and maintenance at KNDS in the St. Wendel district, subject to the Bundestag's decision.
The exact date of the Budget Committee's decision on the overall contract for production and maintenance of the Patria tanks by KNDS in Freisen has not been specified; it is expected "very soon" following the Defense Committee's approval of a pilot model in October 2024. If the Budget Committee decides positively, Saarland's significance as a defense location will be further enhanced.
The production of 1,000 to around 3,000 Patria armored vehicles for the Bundeswehr is still being considered. The decision of the Defense Committee is expected to lead to the production of a transport tank at KNDS in Freisen-Schwarzerden, potentially securing a billion-dollar order.
The CDU parliamentary group's armaments officer, Christopher Salm, stated that this decision will secure the Saarland location in the long term and create further industrial jobs in northern Saarland. This decision, if approved, opens up immense growth prospects for the defense industry in Saarland, especially in production and maintenance.
Many new jobs could be created as a result of the production of the Patria tank in Saarland. If the Budget Committee decides positively, it will be a crucial step towards the long-term development of the armor industry in Saarland.
