SABECO transforms environmental goals into tangible undertakings
In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability, Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corporation (SABECO) has been making remarkable strides in reducing its carbon footprint and enhancing its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.
Nguyen Hoang Giang, the General Director of Saigon Beer Trading One Member Co., Ltd. (SATRACO) and a member of SABECO's executive committee, emphasized the company's commitment to translating ESG aspirations into measurable actions.
One of the key achievements for SABECO has been a 7.3% reduction in water consumption per unit of product compared to 2023. This is part of the company's long-term roadmap towards Net Zero 2050, which includes a medium-term milestone of cutting 42% of emissions by 2030.
SABECO's commitment to renewable energy is evident as 40.54% of energy in its beer production came from renewable sources by 2024. The company has made significant progress under its ESG pillars, with 64% of its breweries having installed solar power systems by the same year. In addition, SABECO has installed over 109km of solar-powered streetlights across 34 provinces.
The company's focus on sustainability extends beyond its own operations. SABECO has partnered with PRO Vietnam and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on extended producer responsibility, taking on the responsibility to manage the environmental impact of its products throughout their entire lifecycle.
SABECO's ESG metrics have been embedded into Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) across multiple functions, ensuring that sustainability is at the heart of the company's operations. The company has also established a board-level sustainability and risk governance committee to oversee its ESG initiatives.
In terms of waste management, 64.22% of SABECO's waste was recycled or reused by 2024. All of SABECO's breweries have achieved ISO 22000 for food safety and ISO 14001 for environmental management.
SABECO's commitment to social responsibility is evident in its support for the "63 Provinces - One Tet" campaign, through which it supported 37,500 people in 2024.
In 2024, SABECO published its first standalone sustainability report aligned with global GRI standards, providing transparency and accountability for its ESG efforts.
SABECO has also formed strategic partnerships with organisations such as TA Vital, Chitose Bio Evolution, and RMIT to jointly develop ESG solutions and advance sustainability efforts on the way to Net Zero 2050. These collaborations are part of SABECO's concrete actions to upgrade production, reduce emissions, and implement its ESG ambitions.
At the Vietnam Climate Summit (VCSF) 2025, SABECO's story resonated strongly with the forum's theme, underscoring the company's commitment to sustainable development. When development is built on an ESG foundation, no one is left behind and the value created will be sustainable not only for the company but also for the nation, concluded Nguyen Hoang Giang.
SABECO's strategic suppliers are also evaluated on ESG criteria and comply with the Code of Conduct, ensuring that the company's sustainability efforts extend beyond its own operations. The company's Beer Research & Development Centre, designed to embed sustainability into innovation, further cements SABECO's position as a leader in sustainable practices in the beverage industry.
