Saddening scenes across Saarland as a slain law enforcement officer is bid a heartfelt adieu

In a tragic turn of events, the 34-year-old police officer, Simon Bohr, was shot and killed during an operation in Volklingen a week ago. The nation was left in shock as the news of his death spread, causing widespread outrage.

The funeral service for Officer Bohr took place in an evangelical church in Saarlouis, attended by approximately 1,500 to 2,000 people. The service was not public but was broadcast in a media center set up for the occasion. A painted heart was placed in front of a podium with a photo of the police officer during the service.

The funeral procession, which stretched for about 1.6 kilometers through the city, included hundreds of police officers in uniform and many people holding white roses. The Saarland Minister President Anke Rehlinger and Interior Minister Reinhold Jost (both SPD) were among those in attendance.

Pastor Jรถrg Beckers described the departure of Officer Bohr as "incomprehensible, disruptive, terrible, and infinitely sad." Police chaplain Hubertus Kesselheim echoed these sentiments, stating that Officer Bohr was selfless, advocated for everyone, and never spoke ill of others. He was also described as an incredibly positive person, professional, reliable, and approachable.

The shooting occurred while Officer Bohr was trying to apprehend the suspected perpetrator of an attack on a gas station. The public prosecutor's office is currently investigating the case, including for murder. The police president, Thorsten Weiler, stated that the Saarland police is going through one of its darkest hours following the officer's death.

Pastor Beckers noted that Simon Bohr will be missed. The widow of Simon Bohr addressed the mourners during the funeral service, but her words were not made public. A central memorial service for Simon Bohr is planned for Friday in Saarbrรผcken, according to a police spokesman. The memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

During the service, a trumpet solo of the Beatles song "Yesterday" was played, a poignant tribute to the fallen officer. The people of Saarland and the nation as a whole continue to mourn the loss of Simon Bohr, a dedicated and respected police officer.
