Saido Berahino reflects on the moment he netted a goal at Old Trafford, remarking, "Wow, that was me scoring during Match of the Day at Old Trafford."
In September 2013, a 20-year-old Saido Berahino made history as he scored the winning goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford, marking West Bromwich Albion's first victory at the stadium since 1978.
Born and raised in Burundi, Berahino grew up idolising Manchester United legends like Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke. Little did he know that he would one day score against the Red Devils.
On that fateful day, Berahino was the youngest player on the bench, with Scott Sinclair starting the match. However, Sinclair got injured during the game, and Berahino was called upon to replace him. The young forward scored the goal in the 13th minute, sending the West Brom fans into raptures.
Berahino felt an "unbelievable and brilliant" feeling upon realising he had scored at Old Trafford. Steve Clarke, the West Brom manager at the time, told Berahino to put on his shin pads before sending him onto the pitch.
The goal was Berahino's first in the Premier League, and it marked the start of a promising career. He went on to score a total of 9 goals in all competitions during the 2013-2014 season, earning him a place in the England U21s squad.
Berahino's impressive performances did not go unnoticed, and he was first trained in the Premier League by West Bromwich Albion's manager Tony Pulis in the 2013/14 season. His form continued to improve, and he netted 20 goals in all competitions during the 2014-2015 season.
In November 2014, Berahino received a full England call-up, with Roy Hodgson, his former West Brom boss, selecting him for the national team. However, his international career was marred by controversy, with Berahino facing racist chants while playing against Aston Villa.
Berahino was not the only West Brom player to face racism. In the 1970s, Cyrille Regis, a West Brom icon, faced horrific racism, including bananas being thrown at him and bullets sent in the post. Regis shared his experiences of racism with Berahino, offering advice and support.
In recognition of his talent and potential, Berahino was awarded the 2014 Under-21 Player of the Year award. Despite the challenges he faced, Berahino continues to be a shining light in English football, with his debut goal at Old Trafford serving as a reminder of his incredible talent and determination.
