Sailing towards Palestine, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi is honored and commemorated by the Global Sumud Flotilla
The Global Sumud Flotilla, an international humanitarian initiative launched in July 2025, set sail from various ports, including Barcelona, with a mission to deliver food, medicine, and other essential supplies to the people of Gaza. Activists from 44 countries joined this noble endeavour, aiming to break Israel's naval blockade of the region.
This flotilla, consisting of over 50 vessels, is not just a humanitarian effort, but also a statement against genocide. The Global Sumud Flotilla declared that the safety and freedom of humanity are bound to that of Palestine. They sail "on behalf of those massacred while standing for humanity and just peace."
Tragedy struck during a demonstration in 2024, when Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a Turkish-American activist, was shot and killed by Israeli forces near Nablus in the occupied West Bank. Video footage and witness testimony indicated that she was deliberately targeted by an Israeli sniper.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned this act as a "clear violation of international law and human rights." They called for justice and commemorated Aysenur on the first anniversary of her death, vowing to continue their efforts to ensure that the heinous crime against her life does not go unpunished.
The Global Sumud Flotilla paid tribute to Aysenur in a social media post, framing their action as a continuation of her fight. They chose action, as Aysenur did, in the hope of bringing relief to the people of Gaza who are currently facing famine conditions.
The Israeli military's preliminary report claimed that Aysenur was "highly likely" struck "indirectly and unintentionally" as its forces responded to protesters allegedly throwing rocks. However, Turkish prosecutors are still investigating the cause of her death as of September 4, 2025.
The Global Sumud Flotilla's voyage serves as a poignant reminder of Aysenur's courage and the ongoing struggle for peace and justice in Palestine. As the flotilla sails towards Gaza, it carries not only essential supplies but also the spirit of a brave activist who gave her life for the cause.
