Samsung introduces One UI for refrigerators and washing machines after a span of 7 years
Samsung Electronics is set to revolutionise the way people interact with technology at home with its upcoming One UI update for home appliances. The update, which will be available starting from 2024, was announced by Jeong Seung Moon, Executive Vice President and Head of the R&D team in Samsung Electronics' Digital Appliances division.
The One UI update aims to provide a uniform and intuitive software experience across all Samsung devices, integrating popular apps and services like Bixby, Gallery app, and Samsung TV Plus into home appliances. However, Samsung TV Plus will not be available on home appliances until a later date.
Samsung's 2024 models with displays will receive encrypted login data and Passkey support, enhancing the security features of these appliances. The goal is to enable seamless device interaction and media usage, making everyday tasks easier and more convenient.
Initially, devices launched in September 2024 will receive the One UI update. Refrigerators with Family Hub and 9-inch screens released this year will receive an improved "AI Vision Inside" function, recognising a larger number of fresh products and frequently used packaged foods.
Samsung also plans to extend One UI to its range of home appliances, including Wi-Fi-enabled refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and induction hobs. Starting this September, these compatible 2024 models will receive the software update, offering improved security features with Knox Matrix.
In addition, Samsung's SmartThings smart home platform will improve connectivity between devices, ensuring a seamless user experience. Users will have access to the Now Brief assistance feature on home appliances, which will display a curated selection of useful content, such as daily weather forecasts, family plans, customised recipes, and household information.
Interestingly, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7, introduced by Samsung in early July, come with the new One UI version pre-installed. One UI 8, based on Android 16, will be distributed by Samsung in September, starting with the Galaxy S25 series.
However, it's important to note that Now Brief will not be available until 2026. Samsung guarantees a seven-year update guarantee for its home appliances, similar to its top smartphones like the Galaxy S25 series and foldables.
The One UI update for home appliances also aims to monitor the status of all connected devices, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency. With these updates, Samsung is set to redefine the future of smart homes.
