Sandkerwa celebration resumes following over a decade-long hiatus

The Bamberg Sandkerwa, a significant event in the UNESCO World Heritage city's calendar, is celebrating its 75th anniversary from August 21st to 25th, 2025. This year, the event promises to be more than just a folk festival; it's a crucial part of Bamberg's identity.

One of the highlights of the anniversary celebration will be the duck race on the Regnitz, a tradition that hasn't taken place on the Sandkerwa for more than ten years. Hundreds of little yellow bath ducks will race from the Lower Bridge to the Markus Bridge, adding an exciting twist to the festivities.

Anyone can purchase a race ticket for the duck race at the Sandkerwa for 4 euros. Each ticket is numbered and assigned to a specific duck for the race. The proceeds from the sale of these tickets will support social projects in the Bamberg region. The event is organized by the Round Table Bamberg for a good cause, indicating that the revenues go to charitable or social initiatives in the area.

The duck race will start after a short framework program at 2:30 PM. The organizer will load the ducks into the starting device directly.

The Sandkerwa takes place in the historic Sand area in Bamberg's old town. Traditional program points like processions and the fisherman's contest on the Regnitz will be part of the anniversary celebration. There will also be special program highlights in the anniversary year of the Sandkerwa.

Race tickets can be bought at participating advance sales points or directly at the Sandkerwa. The BMW dealership Sperber, Ohmstraße 10a, Spies office, Laubanger 17b, Gewürzhelden Store/K & K Gewürzladen, Jaeckstraße 58, Maedla, Obstmarkt 4, Papeterie im Sand, Obere Sandstraße 14, and Spielwarengigant im Ertl-Zentrum, Emil-Kemmer-Str. 19 are advance sales points for the duck race tickets.

So, mark your calendars for the Bamberg Sandkerwa from August 21st to 25th, 2025, and join in the fun of the duck race! Your support will contribute to the social projects in the Bamberg region.
