Saskatchewan Roughriders on track to establish historic 9-1 record in team history
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are gearing up for a crucial showdown against the Calgary Stampeders in Week 12. If the Roughriders emerge victorious, they will make history by achieving their first 9-1 record in their 115-year history.
However, the current players and coaches are keeping a level head, focusing on the game rather than the potential milestone. Corey Mace, the head coach of the Roughriders, has not expressed an interest in becoming a trivia question about being the first coach to lead the team through double-digit games with just one loss.
The Stampeders, currently standing at 6-3, present a tougher opponent than the Roughriders faced in 2013 when they lost to the Blue Bombers. In their previous meeting this year, the Stampeders handed the Roughriders their only blemish of the season, with Vernon Adams Junior passing for over 400 yards and three touchdowns.
The Roughriders have a poor record at Princess Auto Stadium, with a 3-13 all-time record, regular season and playoffs combined. This statistic adds an extra layer of challenge to the upcoming game in Calgary.
A Roughrider win on Saturday, especially if they win by 15 or more, would reduce the magic number of Saskatchewan wins and Calgary losses needed to clinch West Final hosting privileges for the Riders to five. This significant victory could also help the Roughriders beat out the Stampeders for first place in the West, as a loss could allow Calgary to once again be within a week of overtaking first place.
The ultimate goal for the Roughriders remains the same - to win the Grey Cup. While a 9-1 record is a step in the right direction, 9-1 unfortunately doesn't guarantee a Grey Cup win, and there's still more work to be done.
Interestingly, only one other CFL franchise, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, has failed to put together a 9-1 start in its history. If the Roughriders can avoid a 9-1 start and the Tiger-Cats continue to struggle, the Roughriders could leave the Tiger-Cats as the only CFL franchise without a 9-1 start in their history.
The Roughriders eventually won their fourth, and to date final, Grey Cup on home turf that November. If they manage to achieve a 9-1 record this season, they will be one step closer to repeating this historic achievement.
Regardless of the outcome, the Roughriders and their fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming game against the Stampeders. The potential for history, the competitive spirit, and the love for the game promise an exciting match-up.
