Sausage Recall Under Scrutiny for Potential E. coli Outbreak - Sausage recall under scrutiny for potential connection to marital illnesses

In the districts of Vorpommern-Rรผgen and Vorpommern-Greifswald, an outbreak of Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) has been reported, according to the State Office for Health and Social Affairs in Rostock. As of Friday, 17 cases of EHEC have been confirmed.

The outbreak has predominantly affected children between one and 15 years old, with some adults also contracting the bacterial infection. Some of the affected children have required treatment in intensive care units, and some have suffered from haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS), a condition that can lead to kidney failure and neurological disorders.

Public health authorities are urging caution and advising the public to thoroughly cook meat products to reduce the risk of EHEC infection. The exact cause of the outbreak remains unknown, and no specific sausage brand or type has been identified as the source.

However, the possible link between the EHEC outbreak and a sausage recall is currently being investigated. The manufacturer of the sausage linked to the EHEC outbreak in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH. The company has recalled its "Zwiebelmettwurst" in 500-gram packaging due to EHEC contamination.

It is worth noting that a number of the affected individuals were tourists, highlighting the need for travellers to exercise caution when consuming food in unfamiliar locations.

As the investigation continues, the public is encouraged to stay informed and follow any guidance provided by public health authorities to minimise the risk of EHEC infection.
