School Safety Initiative: Implementing Speed Limits for Child Protection on School Commutes
In an effort to raise awareness about the dangers around schools and prevent accidents involving children, the Hanau police in Southeast Hesse conducted a "Blitz for Kids" traffic safety initiative on Monday.
During the day, a total of 90 vehicles were controlled at two schools. A mobile speed camera was used to monitor vehicles for adherence to speed limits. The control points were located on "In den Argonnerwiesen" (50 zone) in the morning and "Alten Rückinger Weg" (30 km/h zone) in the afternoon.
The most serious offense was a driver traveling at 55 km/h in the "Alten Rückinger Weg," which fell within the fine range. A total of 32 speed violations were punished, while 25 were in the warning fine range.
The police also paid attention to "parent taxis," which can lead to dangerous situations in front of schools.
Students from the Paul-Gerhardt School assisted in the initiative, handing out "green cards" or "yellow cards" based on driving behavior. "Green cards" were given to those who adhered to the prescribed speed, while "yellow cards" were given to those driving too fast.
Police Lieutenant Thorsten Zimmermann stated that children are particularly at risk in road traffic, especially near schools. He emphasized the importance of driving carefully and slowly to ensure the safety of children getting to and from school.
