Science students facing complex challenges showcase their innovative projects at the Montana Science Fair competition
In early April, the Adam Center played host to the 69th annual Montana Science Fair, a highlight for many students taking Advanced Problems in Science at Hellgate High School. This statewide event offers students the opportunity to showcase their scientific research and discuss their findings with people who understand their topic more.
Among the winners of the Hellgate awards was Lea Amish, who received a scholarship to the University of Montana for her project on the confederated Salish and Kootenai tribal members' opinions on the implementation of vermin cogenetic research for tobacco cessation efforts. Lea found the experience of presenting to knowledgeable people and speaking with others about her topic valuable. She expressed admiration for projects presented by her classmates like Devyn or Faith.
Several Hellgate students, including Devyn Deschamps, brought home awards from the science fair. Devyn's project advanced him to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which will take place in Los Angeles starting May 12. He is the only Hellgate student representing at ISEF, the largest pre-college STEM fair in the world.
The Montana Science Fair awards are categorized and divided by project type. Lea Amish, for instance, won in the social science category. Science fair presentations can range from various topics, making the event a diverse and enriching experience for all participants.
Attending the statewide science fair provides students with the opportunity to discuss their topics with professionals. Lea Amish finds meeting other science-interested individuals and learning about their projects valuable. She believes that these interactions foster a deeper understanding of science and encourage innovation.
For the top three overall winners from the Montana fair, the journey doesn't end with the state competition. They will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair, giving them a chance to compete against the best pre-college scientists from around the world.
The Montana Science Fair is just the beginning for many young scientists. It's a stepping stone towards bigger competitions and a chance to showcase their passion for science on a global stage. The event underscores the importance of fostering scientific curiosity and providing opportunities for young minds to explore and excel in the field of science.
