Starting from early August, Hürth Municipal Utilities GmbH will embark on a comprehensive modernization project for a 50-year-old reinforced concrete retaining wall along the Villering in the Hermülheim district.

The retaining wall, approximately 187 meters long, is located between the elevated Hürth-Park shopping center and the lower-lying residential settlement. It exhibits significant damage, including cracks, spalling of concrete, exposed and corroded reinforcement, and damaged joint material. The existing head beam of the retaining wall is severely damaged and will be completely dismantled during the renovation.

The construction company responsible for the project has not been specified in the available information. However, the company will ensure that waste collection continues throughout the construction phase. To facilitate this, residents are encouraged to clearly mark their bins with the respective house number.

During the construction period, the Spijkenisser Straße will remain open to vehicle traffic. No detours will be necessary for bus lines running through the construction area. Residents can place their waste bins at the curb for collection as usual.

On the Villering side, between Berliner Platz and Schwarzer Weg, traffic will be fully closed for approximately 2 to 3 weeks starting 4th August 2025. Afterwards, the Villering will remain open to one-way traffic. Pedestrian access to the Villering will be maintained: a pedestrian path will be continuously available. Access to private properties will not be affected by the construction measures.

To accommodate the construction, public parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of the closure will temporarily not be available. On the Villering side, trellises will be installed and subsequently planted by Hürth Public Utilities. On Spijkenisser Straße, the existing paved surface will be replaced with a green area, a lawn is planned.

In addition to the concrete renovation, adjacent exterior facilities will be comprehensively redesigned. The stair and ramp facilities along the retaining wall will be removed without replacement as part of the measure. The entire construction site will be enclosed with a foil-covered scaffold during the works to protect the surroundings and comply with safety regulations.

For any queries, contact Jan Alfen at Hürth Public Utilities: 02233 / 53-492. The completion of the entire measure is scheduled for the turn of the year.

From the start of the planned closure, pedestrian traffic will be permanently redirected via the Berliner Platz. The project manager can be found at Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 40, 50354 Hürth. It is recommended to clearly mark the bins with the respective house number to ensure smooth waste collection during the construction phase.
