Secure and unhindered motoring for everyone
The city of Hamm has unveiled its revamped Goethestraße, following a nearly year-long construction project that concluded on August 4, 2024. The rebuild, spanning approximately 720 meters from the Alleestraße to the Südenwall, has significantly bolstered cycling traffic while maintaining car traffic flow.
The renovation project involved the reconfiguration of four lanes into fewer lanes, with the aim of improving conditions for all road users. The total cost of the rebuild was around 2.75 million euros, with the city contributing around 515,000 euros, and approximately two million euros coming from grants.
One of the key features of the renovated Goethestraße is the inclusion of dedicated bike lanes and separate paths for cyclists. This has freed up much-needed space for cyclists, making it a quick and safe route for cyclists from the southern city center to Hamm City.
The traffic study prior to the rebuild confirmed that car traffic can flow smoothly on one lane per direction. To ensure the smooth flow of traffic, the traffic lights along the Goethestraße were updated, and a 'true' intersection traffic light was installed at the Goethestraße/Schillerstraße crossroads.
Mayor Marc Herter stated that the rebuild of the Goethestraße is a real win for Hamm's traffic, hailing it as a significant milestone in Hamm's traffic transition. City building director Andreas Mentz added that the reopening will significantly ease inner-city traffic.
The Lippe Association contributed to the cost of adjusting manhole covers during the renovation. In total, around 2,400 tons of asphalt were laid during the rebuild.
The reopening of the Goethestraße offers optimal conditions for a safe driving experience for all road users. According to Mayor Herter, the rebuild provides a significant boost to Hamm's cycling infrastructure, making it easier and safer for cyclists to navigate the city.
The reopening of the Goethestraße marks an important step towards Hamm's commitment to sustainable and efficient urban mobility. With the renovated Goethestraße now open, road users can look forward to a smoother and safer journey through the city.
