Seize the opportunity to purchase high-performance automobiles before they are gone
In the ever-evolving world of automotive manufacturing, a significant change is underway. Some iconic models are bidding farewell, while others are adapting to the times.
Jaguar has announced that it will not replace the F-Type, and Audi has made a similar decision regarding the TT. Meanwhile, a host of popular performance models have been discontinued, including the Peugeot 208 GTI, 308 GTI, Ford Fiesta ST, Focus ST, and Focus RS, Abarth 124 Spider, Chrysler 300 SRT, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, Renault Clio RS, Megane RS, and the Megane, which is set to become a small electric SUV.
Despite these changes, some established brands are holding on to their performance-oriented vehicles. DS Automobiles, with its powerful electric performance models like the E-Tense Performance with 600 kW, and brands within the Volkswagen Group such as Porsche, which continues to offer performance-focused vehicles, are among those maintaining their commitment.
The market for sports cars and performance models is experiencing a decline globally. However, there are still several top-tier sports car models available, such as the BMW M2, Ford Mustang, VW Golf GTI, Mazda MX-5, Honda Civic Type R, Toyota GR Corolla, and Subaru BRZ. With these models, enthusiasts are encouraged to savour the current offerings, as they may not be available again in the future.
The shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) is becoming increasingly prominent. EVs are not only being seen as a practical alternative to sports cars but also as a 'technological tour-de-force'. Brands are positioning their EVs as performance models, such as the Kia EV6 GT.
Emissions regulations, like the proposed EU7, are causing financial and manpower challenges for car manufacturers. The cost of electric vehicle programs is high due to immature technology and expensive engineering. As a result, niche performance models and sports cars are considered a distraction, with brands focusing more on meeting future emissions regulations.
The Kia Stinger and Hyundai i30 and i20 N are expected to have short production runs. In this transitional period, sports car buyers should consider their current choices as a golden era, as some of the big bangers available now may not be available again in the future.
The future of performance cars is uncertain, but one thing is clear: the landscape is changing. As brands focus more on electric vehicles, the grand champion of a tech-equipped hot hatch or a high-end sedan loaded with features may no longer hold the same allure. For now, we encourage you to appreciate the current offerings in this golden era of sports cars.
