Rear Admiral (Rtd) Datuk Anuar Alias, Selangor's 2025 Independence Personality, Honoured for Heroic Acts in Angola

Rear Admiral (Rtd) Datuk Anuar Alias, a distinguished figure in Malaysia's defence force, has been named Selangor's 2025 Independence Personality. This recognition comes in light of his exceptional bravery and service, particularly during his involvement in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Angola in the early 1990s.

Anuar, who began his naval career on February 1, 1981, at Segenting Camp, Negeri Sembilan, was selected to join the UN mission as an observer in 1998. He was stationed in the conflict-ridden Bailundo Team Site, a rebel stronghold in central Angola, where he participated in several combat operations.

During his mission, Anuar was involved in a series of harrowing incidents. One such incident involved a civilian lorry coming under rebel ambush. Despite the danger, Anuar managed to save several lives, a testament to his courage and quick thinking.

Another incident occurred when an UN armoured vehicle struck a landmine, placing several UN personnel in immediate danger. Anuar sprang into action, rescuing several personnel from Namibia out of the danger zone.

Perhaps one of his most remarkable acts occurred when he rescued nearly 20 children from a high-risk area in Angola. His selfless act underscores his commitment to protecting the innocent, even in the face of adversity.

For his bravery and heroism, Anuar was awarded the Pingat Gagah Berani (PGB) gallantry award on June 2, 2000. He is the only Royal Malaysian Navy officer to receive this prestigious award. Upon receiving the award, Anuar described it as a great honor for himself and the national defense force.

After returning from Angola, Anuar spoke about his experiences to Bernama, detailing the challenges he faced and the lives he saved. His stories serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave men and women in uniform.

Today, Anuar continues to be an inspiration to many, not just in the military, but to the nation as a whole. His bravery, selflessness, and dedication to duty are qualities that we can all strive to emulate. The award presented to him by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari is a well-deserved recognition of his exceptional service.
