In the first half of 2025, Baden-Württemberg's traffic safety landscape has shown a complex picture. While the total number of traffic accidents slightly decreased compared to the previous year, the number of drug-related traffic accidents and fatalities increased significantly.

According to the latest police reports, 432 drug-related traffic accidents were reported, marking a 29.7% increase from the same period in the previous year. This alarming trend has been met with a firm response from the authorities, with the police stepping up traffic controls to counter the issue.

The increase in drug-related offenses in traffic is not limited to accidents alone. The police reported 5,763 offenses related to drug use in traffic, a 15.8% increase from the previous year. This underscores the need for continued vigilance and education on the dangers of drug use while driving.

Excessive or inappropriate speed was a major factor in more than a third of the traffic fatalities in the first half of 2025. The ongoing traffic safety campaign, GIVE CARE ON THE ROAD, continues to emphasise the importance of responsible driving and adherence to speed limits.

The rise in traffic accidents involving E-scooters is another concerning trend. The number of such accidents increased by 44.3% in the first half of 2025, resulting in four fatalities, compared to two in the same period in the previous year. Young people between the ages of 14 and 24 were particularly affected, making up nearly a third of the seriously injured, over half of the slightly injured, and half of the fatalities.

Interior Minister Thomas Strobl has reiterated the government's zero-tolerance policy towards those who endanger traffic safety through reckless consumption of alcohol and drugs. During the Europe-wide coordinated ROADPOL control week on alcohol and drugs in traffic from June 16 to 22, 2025, the police detected 402 offenses related to drunk driving and 346 offenses related to drug use in traffic.

The Mid-year report on traffic accident trends in Baden-Württemberg for 2025 is now available as a PDF, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of traffic safety in the region. The report also includes the number of Pedelec fatalities, which rose from nine in the previous year to 22 in the first half of 2025, with 16 of these fatalities occurring among seniors.
