Service offering free blood pressure and cholesterol level checks available

The island of Guernsey has launched a new health screening programme aimed at improving the lives of its residents. This initiative, spearheaded by Guernsey Chest and Heart Centre, aims to help islanders live longer and healthier lives by detecting and treating undiagnosed cases of high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Caroline Ogier, the Manager of Guernsey Chest and Heart Centre, stated that the simple checks offered could prevent serious illnesses in the future. The testing service will be accessible at various locations, including the Chest and Heart Centre at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and community centres.

Dr. Nicola Brink, Director of Public Health, has emphasised the importance of the programme, stating that many people in the community are unknowingly affected by high blood pressure and cholesterol. Early detection can significantly improve someone's health and quality of life, and early detection and treatment of these conditions can reduce the risk of heart disease, strokes, and dementia.

The testing service will offer walk-in clinics on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and Saturday mornings, throughout September. Funding for the service has been agreed upon until December, and if the pilot is successful, the testing service will be offered to Alderney residents.
